  • NOT IN YOUR WAR ANYMORE

    By Ada Aharoni

    * This poem is dedicated to the memory of Anat Rosen Winter,
victim of the suicide bomb in the "A Propos" Coffee House in
Tel Aviv (March 1997). May she rest in peace.

"War is as anachronistic as cannibalism,
    slavery and colonialism..."

    Rosalie Bertell, No Immediate Answer

I am not in your war anymore.
Surely we cannot paint war green
    when it is dying,
so let's paint it in all its true
foliage colors, to help its fall.

    First, flowing flamboyant crimson blood
    on throbbing temples and hands,
then russet bronze fiery metal cartridges
stuffing the crevices of young hearts
while golden laser Napalm dragon tongues
gluttonously lick the sizzling eyes and lips
of our children, under the giant mushrooms
freshened by mustard and acid rain.
Surely, at the close of our
    great atomic century
we will soon find the archaic history tree,
where we can dump our fearful bottle legacy

And our grandchildren will ask their fathers,
    what were bombs for, Pa?
And with eyes full of wonder,
    they will read the story
of the glorious imprisonment of the Nuclear Giant, in his bottle, corked forever,
    and will joyfully exclaim:
" Well done Ma, well done Pa!"

    * DEDICATION TO ANAT
The late Anat Rosen Winter, a young, beautiful, successful and creative 30-year old lawyer, was cruelly blown up by a fanatic and demonic suicide bomber terrorist, while she was peacefully sitting with her baby Shani and her school friend, in the "A Propos" Coffee House, in Tel Aviv, two years ago. Both girls were instantly killed, but Anat, with a mother's instinct, threw herself on baby Shani to save her, and she absorbed all the blast. Shani is alive and healthy today and she enjoys visiting her grandparents, Zehava and Zvi Rosen, in Raanana, who tell us she is exactly the joyful picture of Anat when she was her age.

A slightly different Hebrew version of the poem above, was included in the moving book "Anat". I am grateful that the poem to Anat has brought me such wonderful new friends, Zehava and Zvi.
I read the above poem on March 11, 1999, at the second anniversary memorial organized by the Lawyers' Association in
Tel Aviv, in memory of Anat.

On this occasion, we will be opening a new branch of IFLAC - BRIDGE, in Tel Aviv and Jaffa, in the memory of Anat.
It will be organized by her parents, and directed by her mother, Zehava Rosen. The spirit of Anat and her love of life, humanity, harmony and peace will thus live on, and will be widely spread throughout the Middle East and our global village. Anat's spirit has not died, it is alive forever in our hearts and memory. The spirit of Anat gives us energy and vitality to continue our crucial peace work, so that such demonic violence against humanity never repeats itself.
    May she rest in peace.

    Ada

    International Congress
    on Conflict Resolution
    Through Culture and Literature

International Convention Center, Shavei Zion, Israel

    (June 28 - 30, 1999)

With great pleasure we invite you to participate in the above exciting and innovative International Congress. The congress will include Israelis, Palestinians, and participants from the Middle East and from all over the world. It will embrace a range of discourses and topics combining scholarly work with position papers, and background briefings, testimonial accounts, workshops, and discussion groups It will also include creative peace literature: stories, poems and plays, as well as musical and artistic creative presentations at the nightly Congress club.

The Congress will address the root causes of conflict and war, and will examine the ways and means for building a Culture and Literature of Peace, toward the new millennium. What we read and watch on TV, movies and media, and the basic values, attitudes and norms we acquire through them, affect us and motivate us all our lives. All wars and conflicts have at their roots cultural and ethnic causes.

On the threshold of the twenty first century, we will examine and offer concrete alternative cultural paths forward toward a more desirable present and future. We will attempt to work together to produce useful proposals for research and programs required to "unviolence" global and national cultures, and thus contribute to the promotion of the enhancement of a peaceful Middle East and global village.

Please fill the Registration Form below and send it to us by fax or airmail, post haste, before March 25. Places are limited.

The Registration Fee - $250 covers:
